A Dutch eighteenth-century woodcut broadside featuring a sixteen-panel narrative of a courtship, complete with rhyming verse.
This Dutch popular print, produced by the firm of Erve H. Rynders in Amsterdam, functions as a visual narrative sequence. It depicts the courtship and eventual marriage of a couple named Jan Steen and Ka. The work is structured in a grid of sixteen individual scenes, each accompanied by rhyming Dutch verse that guides the viewer through the progression of the relationship. The style is characteristic of eighteenth-century broadsides, which were mass-produced for a general audience. The imagery relies on simple, bold lines and minimal shading, typical of woodcut techniques used for inexpensive, widely distributed prints.
The narrative follows a classic romantic arc. It begins with the initial meeting and courtship, moves through moments of jealousy and dispute, and concludes with the couple's domestic union. The hand-applied colour, primarily in shades of red, provides a modest visual emphasis to the figures, helping to distinguish the protagonists from the sparse architectural and natural backgrounds. Such prints were often pinned to the walls of modest homes, serving as both entertainment and moral instruction for the youth of the period.
Jacobus Wendel, associated with the Rynders printing house, was a known producer of these popular sheets. The text at the bottom identifies the publisher's location in the Tuin Dwarsstraat in Amsterdam. The work provides a glimpse into the social customs and visual culture of the Dutch urban population during the late eighteenth century. The narrative is direct and unadorned, reflecting the functional nature of the medium. By presenting the story in a series of frames, the print anticipates the sequential storytelling found in later comic strips and graphic narratives. It remains a clear example of the intersection between folk art and commercial printing in the Netherlands.
