A striking Symbolist work by Vsevolod Maksymovych, featuring two figures in an embrace set against a decorative, circular background.
Vsevolod Maksymovych was a short-lived but distinct figure within the early twentieth-century Ukrainian art scene. His work often explores themes of eroticism, mythology, and the subconscious, reflecting the broader European interest in Symbolism and Art Nouveau during this period. This particular composition, titled Kiss, demonstrates his characteristic approach to form and decorative surface treatment.
The figures are rendered with a focus on fluid, rounded contours that merge into one another, creating a sense of unity between the two subjects. The background is filled with a repetitive, circular motif that flattens the pictorial space and draws the eye toward the central embrace. This decorative pattern acts as a frame for the figures, echoing the aesthetic concerns of the Vienna Secessionists, particularly the work of Gustav Klimt. The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones of ochre, terracotta, and deep red, which contribute to the atmospheric quality of the piece.
Maksymovych often utilised a linear style that prioritised rhythmic movement over anatomical precision. His approach to the human form is stylised, with soft, flowing lines that suggest a dreamlike state. The lack of sharp edges or rigid perspective allows the viewer to focus on the emotional connection between the figures. By integrating the subjects into the surrounding ornamental field, the artist creates a cohesive visual experience where the boundary between the figures and their environment becomes porous. This work provides a window into the unique stylistic synthesis Maksymovych achieved before his untimely death at the age of twenty.
