A woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicting the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto during a winter snowfall.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicts the Kinkakuji, or Golden Pavilion, in Kyoto during a winter snowfall. Sadanobu was a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, which operated in the Osaka and Kyoto region. Unlike the Edo-based artists who often focused on theatrical subjects, the Kamigata artists frequently produced prints of local sites and scenery.
The composition balances the architectural form of the pavilion against the natural elements of the pond and the distant mountain. The artist uses a limited palette to convey the atmosphere of a cold, quiet evening. The dark blue of the water and sky provides a contrast to the pale, snow-covered surfaces of the roof and the surrounding terrain. The falling snow is rendered as small, white flecks across the darker areas of the print, creating a sense of depth and movement. A pine tree occupies the right foreground, its branches weighed down by snow, which frames the view of the pavilion. The structure itself is depicted with clear, precise lines, showing the three-tiered design of the building. The phoenix ornament atop the roof is visible against the sky. This print belongs to a tradition of meisho-e, or pictures of famous places, which allowed viewers to experience the beauty of specific locations through the medium of the woodblock print. The work demonstrates the technical skill involved in the carving and printing process, particularly in the application of colour to represent the transition from the dark sky to the snow-covered ground.
