A detailed ornithological study of the Key-west Dove, originally published in John James Audubon's The Birds of America.
This print is Plate 167 from the monumental publication, The Birds of America, produced by John James Audubon between 1827 and 1838. The work depicts the Key-west Dove, now known as the Key West Quail-Dove, in a naturalistic setting. Audubon observed these birds during his expedition to the Florida Keys in 1832. The composition captures two birds in a moment of interaction, perched upon a fallen log amongst native flora, including the morning glory vine.
Audubon utilised a combination of watercolour, pastel, and pencil for his original studies, which were then translated into copperplate engravings by Robert Havell Jr. in London. The process involved etching the outlines, followed by aquatint to provide texture and depth, and finally, hand-colouring by a team of assistants. This method allowed for the reproduction of fine details in the plumage and the subtle variations in the botanical elements.
The Key-west Dove is rendered with scientific precision, reflecting Audubon's desire to document North American avian life in life-sized scale. The birds are shown in profile, with their wings partially extended, a characteristic pose that provides a clear view of their feather patterns and coloration. The background remains minimal, focusing the viewer's attention on the anatomical accuracy of the subjects. The inclusion of the plant life serves to provide context for the habitat of the species, rather than acting as a decorative frame. This print remains a significant example of nineteenth-century scientific illustration, combining rigorous observation with artistic skill. The paper retains the original plate marks and inscriptions, characteristic of the double-elephant folio edition.

Artist Biography
John James Audubon
He was born illegitimate in 1785 in Les Cayes, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), the son of a French merchant and a Creole woman. He was sent to America at eighteen to avoid Napoleonic conscription. He was also a serial fabricator: he claimed his father was an admiral (he was a captain), said his family had been imprisoned in the Bastille (they had not), and invented frontier stories about fighting wolves and sleeping in igloos. He ran a dry-goods store in Kentucky and was jailed for bankruptcy in 1819.
The paintings themselves are extraordinary: precise, dynamic, and composed with a narrative quality that goes beyond scientific illustration. His legacy is contested. The National Audubon Society and several regional chapters dropped his name in 2023 because of his documented history as an enslaver. He died in 1851.
