A 16th-century woodcut depicting the Three Christian Worthies: Charlemagne, Godfrey of Bouillon, and King Arthur in period-appropriate armour.
This woodcut depicts the 'Three Christian Worthies', a popular theme in medieval and Renaissance iconography. The figures represent Charlemagne, Godfrey of Bouillon, and King Arthur. These men were considered the ideal models of chivalry and Christian leadership during the period. The artist, known only by the monogram HL, employs a graphic style typical of early 16th-century German printmaking.
The composition arranges the three figures in a standing formation. Each character wears contemporary armour, which reflects the fashion of the artist's own time rather than the historical eras in which these men lived. Charlemagne, on the left, is identifiable by his imperial crown and the shield bearing the eagle. Godfrey of Bouillon stands in the centre, while King Arthur is positioned on the right. The inclusion of heraldic shields and specific armour details provides a visual narrative of their status as legendary defenders of the faith.
The woodcut technique relies on bold, black lines to define the forms and textures of the metal plates, chainmail, and fabric. The shading is achieved through parallel hatching, a common method for creating volume in early print media. The text at the top, 'DREI GVT CRISTEN', serves as a clear label for the viewer, ensuring the identity of the subjects is unmistakable. This print belongs to a broader tradition of didactic imagery, where historical and legendary figures were used to communicate moral and social values to a literate and semi-literate audience. The work remains a clear example of how Renaissance artists interpreted medieval mythology through the lens of their own contemporary aesthetic and technical capabilities.
