A fine art print of the Karasumaru Fragment, a masterful example of 11th-century Japanese calligraphy attributed to Fujiwara no Sadayori.
The Karasumaru Fragment is a celebrated example of Japanese calligraphy from the Heian period. It contains three poems from the Gosen wakashū, or Later Collection of Japanese Poems. Attributed to the courtier and poet Fujiwara no Sadayori, this work demonstrates the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the era. The script, known as kana, flows with a rhythmic grace that prioritises the visual harmony of the characters over rigid legibility.
The paper itself is a work of art, featuring subtle decorative elements that provide a textured background for the ink. The brushwork exhibits a mastery of pressure and release, creating variations in line weight that guide the eye down the vertical columns. This style of writing was central to the aristocratic culture of the time, where the ability to compose and transcribe poetry was a requirement for social standing.
This fragment is part of a larger tradition of manuscript preservation in Japan, where individual pages from scrolls were often separated and mounted as independent works for tea ceremonies or private study. The preservation of such pieces allows for the examination of early Japanese literary history and the development of the kana syllabary. The ink remains clear against the aged paper, maintaining the immediacy of the original hand. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the ink and the delicate quality of the paper, offering an authentic representation of a significant historical document.
