A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the coastal station of Kanagawa, featuring travellers, a teahouse, and sailing vessels.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the third station of the Tokaido road, Kanagawa. It belongs to the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, a variation of his famous travel collection that incorporates kyoka, or comic verse, into the composition. The print captures a coastal scene where travellers navigate a path overlooking the bay.
In the foreground, figures carry goods along a road that slopes towards a teahouse, where patrons rest under a thatched roof. The middle ground features the calm waters of the bay, dotted with sailing vessels that provide a sense of scale and movement. A large tree on the left frames the composition, guiding the eye towards the distant shoreline and the soft, atmospheric horizon. Hiroshige employs a balanced colour palette, using muted blues for the water and warm, earthy tones for the architecture and ground.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine human activity with natural surroundings. The inclusion of calligraphy adds a layer of literary engagement, typical of the cultural interests of the Edo period. The print reflects the popularity of travel and the documentation of regional sites during the nineteenth century. By focusing on the daily life of travellers and the specific geography of the Tokaido route, Hiroshige provides a window into the social and physical environment of historical Japan. The clean lines and controlled application of colour are characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques of the era, where multiple blocks were used to build the final image. This piece remains a clear example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, documenting both the physical journey and the poetic associations attached to the various stations along the road.
