A 1787 Dutch engraving featuring patriotic calligraphy and allegorical figures, reflecting the political climate of the Patriot era.
This 1787 work by Leonard Jozef Ferrier is a fine example of Dutch patriotic calligraphy and engraving from the late eighteenth century. The composition centres on the phrase 'LIEFDE tot het VADERLAND baard EENDRAGT' (Love for the fatherland begets unity), a sentiment reflecting the political climate of the Netherlands during the Patriot era. The text is rendered in a decorative, flourished script, typical of the period's formal penmanship manuals and commemorative prints.
The central message is framed by a rectangular border composed of architectural motifs, swags of foliage, and ribbons. Within the border, two circular medallions flank the text. The left medallion depicts a classical figure holding a globe, while the right medallion shows a female figure holding a shield, both serving as allegorical representations of civic duty and national identity. The precision of the line work demonstrates the technical skill required for copperplate engraving, where every stroke contributes to the balance of the overall design.
Ferrier employs a formal, symmetrical layout that directs the viewer's attention to the moralising text. The use of varied line weights, from the heavy, shaded letters of the main words to the delicate, thin lines of the floral garlands, creates a sense of depth and texture on the two-dimensional surface. This print functions as both a display of calligraphic mastery and a piece of political propaganda, designed to promote national cohesion during a period of significant social and political tension. The work remains a clear record of the aesthetic values and patriotic rhetoric prevalent in Dutch visual culture at the end of the eighteenth century.
