This print originates from the Bat-tala publishing tradition of 19th-century Kolkata. These works were produced by local artisans for a popular audience, often depicting mythological subjects or contemporary social themes. The composition is divided into two distinct arched niches, each housing a primary deity.

On the left, the goddess Kali stands upon the recumbent figure of Shiva. She is depicted with her characteristic four arms, holding a severed head and a blade, surrounded by an architectural frame that suggests a temple interior. On the right, Jagaddhatri is shown mounted upon a lion, which in turn stands over an elephant. Both figures are flanked by smaller attendant figures, maintaining a strict symmetry that is common in this style of devotional print.

The aesthetic relies on bold, linear woodblock carving. The artist employs a clear, graphic approach to the figures, using hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The application of colour is somewhat irregular, typical of the hand-tinting processes used in mass-produced prints of this era. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, off-white tone that provides a neutral ground for the black ink and the muted red and blue pigments.

This work reflects the intersection of traditional religious iconography and the emerging print culture of colonial India. The Bat-tala artists adapted ancient visual narratives into a format accessible to the urban public. By simplifying complex theological concepts into clear, readable images, these prints functioned as both devotional objects and affordable art for the home.
