A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers crossing a bridge at Kakegawa station on the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print is part of the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, a collection documenting the route between Edo and Kyoto. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the twenty-sixth station, Kakegawa, with a focus on the daily life of travellers crossing a bridge. In the background, the silhouette of Mount Akiba rises against a pale sky, providing a sense of geographical context to the journey.
The composition employs a clear division between the foreground activity and the distant terrain. A group of figures, including a monk and several pedestrians, navigate the arched bridge. Their postures suggest the physical exertion of the climb, while the inclusion of a kite flying above adds a sense of movement and playfulness to the scene. To the right, workers are visible in the fields, grounding the image in the agricultural reality of the region. Hiroshige uses a controlled palette, relying on shades of blue for the water and sky, which contrasts with the muted tones of the bridge and the figures' clothing.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the ukiyo-e process. The lines are clean, defining the structure of the bridge and the contours of the distant mountain. The use of bokashi, or colour gradation, is evident in the sky, where the blue deepens towards the top edge. This work reflects the artist's ability to combine topographical observation with human narrative. It remains a primary example of the travel-themed prints that defined Hiroshige's career during the Edo period.
