A woodblock print by Juyōdō Toshikuni depicting the Kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan in a circular frame, showcasing the distinct Kamigata-e style.
This woodblock print by Juyōdō Toshikuni captures the actor Nakamura Shikan in a moment of quiet preparation. The composition centres on the actor, framed within a circular reserve that contrasts with the geometric, repeating pattern of the background. Toshikuni, a practitioner of the Kamigata-e style, focuses on the specific features and expressions of the performer, moving away from the more idealised portraits common in Edo-period prints.
The actor is depicted holding a small prop, his gaze directed away from the viewer. The use of a circular frame, or 'maru-gata', creates a sense of intimacy, as if the viewer is catching a glimpse of the actor behind the scenes of a Kabuki performance. The background features a stylised, repeating motif in a muted red, which provides a graphic counterpoint to the soft blue of the circular frame. The lines are precise, defining the actor's facial structure and the folds of his patterned kimono with clarity.
Juyōdō Toshikuni was active in Osaka during the early nineteenth century. His work is known for its attention to the individual characteristics of actors, often capturing them in roles or private moments that reflect the culture of the Kamigata theatre scene. This print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the woodblock process, from the registration of the colours to the application of the ink. The balance between the decorative background and the focused portraiture is characteristic of the period's aesthetic preferences. This piece offers a view into the world of Japanese theatre, documenting the appearance and style of a specific performer through the medium of the print.
