A 1672 historical map of Westphalia by Jan Matthysz., featuring detailed etching of Roman-era tribal territories and topography.
This etching, titled Kaart van Westfalen, is a historical map dating to 1672. It depicts the region of Westphalia as it was conceptualised during the Roman period, rather than the contemporary geography of the seventeenth century. The map focuses on the tribal territories and topographical features of the area, using stylised symbols to represent forests, hills, and river systems. The cartographic approach is typical of the period, prioritising historical and classical accuracy over modern surveying techniques.
The composition is organised around a central orientation, with the cardinal directions marked in Latin along the borders. The map features a decorative cartouche in the lower-left corner, which provides the title and context in Latin. The typography is clear, with place names and tribal designations etched in a formal serif script. The use of line work is precise, creating a clear distinction between the waterways and the landmasses. The map serves as a record of how seventeenth-century scholars interpreted ancient Roman geography, reflecting the intellectual interests of the Dutch Golden Age.
Jan Matthysz. produced this work with a focus on clarity and historical detail. The etching technique allows for the fine lines necessary to delineate the complex river networks and the dense clusters of trees that populate the terrain. The map does not attempt to provide a realistic view of the region but instead offers a schematic representation of historical boundaries and locations. It remains a useful document for those interested in the history of cartography and the reception of classical antiquity in early modern Europe. The print is presented on high-quality paper, preserving the fine details of the original copperplate engraving.
