A detailed nineteenth-century Dutch engraving featuring a primary map of Curaçao, a regional Caribbean inset, and a plan of the harbour at Sint Anna Baai.
This nineteenth-century engraving, produced by the Dutch firm Gebroeders van Cleef, provides a detailed topographical representation of the island of Curaçao. The print functions as a primary cartographic document, capturing the geographical features of the island with precision. The central focus is the main map of Curaçao, which employs hachure lines to indicate elevation and terrain, a common technique in period map-making to convey three-dimensional relief on a two-dimensional surface.
In addition to the primary map, the composition includes two supplementary elements. To the upper right, an inset map provides a broader regional context, displaying the Caribbean islands. To the lower right, a smaller, more focused plan depicts the harbour of Sint Anna Baai and the fortifications of Willemstad. This inclusion of multiple scales allows the viewer to understand both the island's position within the Caribbean archipelago and its specific maritime infrastructure.
The typography used for the titles and labels reflects the formal, elegant script styles prevalent in Dutch publishing during the mid-1800s. The engraving process allows for fine line work, particularly in the rendering of the coastline and the bathymetric lines surrounding the island. As a historical record, this print offers insight into how the Dutch colonial administration documented their territories during this period. The monochromatic palette and clean lines make it a suitable choice for those interested in the history of navigation, colonial geography, or the aesthetic of antique scientific illustration. The work remains a clear example of the technical standards maintained by commercial cartographers in the Netherlands during the nineteenth century, balancing functional information with a disciplined, clean visual presentation.
