A refined Dutch Mannerist engraving depicting the allegorical figure of Justice, complete with traditional scales and sword, by Jacob Matham.
This engraving by Jacob Matham depicts the allegorical figure of Justice, a common subject in late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century Dutch art. Matham, a skilled engraver and draughtsman from Haarlem, was a pupil of Hendrick Goltzius. His work reflects the technical precision and stylistic conventions of the Northern Mannerist tradition, which often prioritised elongated forms and sophisticated drapery arrangements.
The figure stands within a shallow, arched niche, a compositional device that provides a sense of architectural depth. She holds the traditional attributes of her office: a sword in her right hand and a set of scales in her left. Her posture is slightly contrapposto, with the heavy folds of her garment rendered through a series of fine, parallel lines and cross-hatching. This technique creates a sense of volume and texture, typical of the period's printmaking practices.
In the upper corners, two small shields are visible, containing symbolic motifs that relate to the theme of moral rectitude. The lower margin features a Latin inscription, which addresses the concept of Astraea, the goddess of justice in Greek mythology, who is said to have abandoned the earth due to human wickedness. The inclusion of such classical references was standard for the intellectual climate of the Dutch Golden Age, where moralising allegories were frequently produced for a learned audience.
Matham's control of the burin is evident in the subtle transitions of light and shadow across the figure's robes and the curved background of the niche. The print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Haarlem school of engravers, who were instrumental in disseminating classical and allegorical imagery throughout Europe during this period.
