A traditional hanging scroll painting of Jurōjin, the Japanese god of longevity, accompanied by a deer, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts Jurōjin, one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology. As the deity of longevity, he is traditionally represented as an elderly man with a long beard, often accompanied by a deer, which serves as a symbol of long life. Kano Tanshin (Moromichi), a member of the prestigious Kano school of painters, employs a refined approach to line and form in this composition. The figure of Jurōjin is rendered with controlled, fluid brushwork that defines the folds of his robes and the texture of his staff. The palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones and subtle washes of colour to create a sense of quiet dignity. The deer, positioned beside the deity, is depicted with a gentle naturalism that balances the more stylised representation of the human figure. The composition is typical of the Edo period, where religious and mythological subjects were frequently produced for both private devotion and decorative display. The artist's attention to the decorative elements of the robes, including the small floral motifs at the hem, demonstrates the technical precision associated with the Kano lineage. This work reflects the synthesis of Chinese iconographic traditions and Japanese aesthetic sensibilities that defined the period. The use of silk as a medium allows for the delicate layering of ink and pigment, resulting in a surface that retains a soft, luminous quality. By focusing on the serene expression of the deity, the artist conveys a sense of timelessness appropriate for a figure associated with the attainment of great age and wisdom.
