A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Aegidius Sadeler (II) depicting the hay harvest during the month of July.
This engraving, titled Juli, belongs to a series depicting the months of the year. Aegidius Sadeler (II) produced this work during his time in Prague, where he served as court engraver to Emperor Rudolf II. The composition captures the agricultural activities associated with mid-summer, specifically the hay harvest.
In the foreground, figures are shown resting under the shade of large, gnarled trees, while others continue their labour in the fields. The scene is populated with workers using scythes and rakes, reflecting the seasonal rhythms of rural life in the early seventeenth century. To the right, a small farm building provides a sense of scale and domestic context. The background opens into a wide, rolling vista, featuring distant hills and a small settlement, demonstrating the artist's skill in creating atmospheric depth through fine, controlled lines.
The print includes Latin text at the bottom, a common feature in allegorical series of this period, which connects the month to classical references and the zodiac sign of Leo, visible in the upper left corner. Sadeler's technique is precise, using varied hatching to define the textures of the foliage, the rough bark of the trees, and the varied fabrics of the peasants' clothing. The work provides a window into the observational traditions of Northern European printmaking, where the depiction of the seasons was a popular subject for both artistic study and commercial distribution.
