A geometric exploration of movement and form, this 1920 work by David Bomberg applies Vorticist principles to the subject of martial arts.
Ju-Jitsu, painted by David Bomberg in 1920, represents a shift in his practice following his experiences during the First World War. While his earlier works often utilised aggressive, fragmented geometry, this piece demonstrates a more controlled application of form. The composition relies on a rigid grid of triangles, which serves as a structural scaffold for the figures depicted.
Two figures are engaged in the martial art of the title, their bodies reduced to angular, geometric components that merge with the background pattern. The colour palette is restrained, consisting of ochre, grey, blue, and white, which allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of shapes rather than tonal variation. The work reflects the influence of Vorticism, a short-lived British movement that sought to capture the energy of the machine age through sharp lines and flattened perspectives.
Bomberg was a member of the London Group and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. His approach to the human form in this period is analytical, stripping away anatomical detail to reveal the underlying mechanics of movement. The grid structure imposes a sense of order upon the dynamic action of the wrestlers, creating a tension between the static background and the active subjects. This painting is held in the collection of the Tate, where it is recognised for its contribution to the development of British modernism. The work avoids the chaotic fragmentation seen in his earlier output, opting instead for a balanced, rhythmic arrangement that directs the eye across the canvas surface. It remains a clear example of how Bomberg adapted avant-garde techniques to explore physical motion and structural composition.
