A detailed historical engraving by Abraham Girardet depicting the Champ de Mai assembly in Paris, 1815, capturing the scale of Napoleon's final political gathering.
This etching and engraving by Abraham Girardet depicts the Champ de Mai, a significant political assembly held in Paris on 1 June 1815. During this event, Napoleon Bonaparte sought to legitimise his return to power by presenting the Acte additionnel to the French people. The composition captures the vast scale of the gathering, with the military formations arranged in precise, geometric blocks across the field. In the foreground, a crowd of civilians observes the proceedings, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the backdrop of the military display.
Girardet employs a clean, linear style characteristic of early nineteenth-century printmaking. The architecture of the Champ de Mars, including the temporary structures erected for the ceremony, is rendered with technical precision. The dome of the École Militaire is visible in the distance, grounding the scene in its specific Parisian location. The artist focuses on the clarity of the event, using fine hatching to define the textures of the uniforms, the crowds, and the expansive sky.
As a historical record, this work provides a visual account of the final months of the First French Empire. The print captures the atmosphere of anticipation and order that defined the ceremony. Girardet, a Swiss engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, was well-regarded for his ability to translate complex historical scenes into accessible, detailed prints. This piece is a fine example of the documentary function of engraving during the Napoleonic era, offering a window into the political theatre of the Hundred Days. The work remains a valuable reference for those interested in the visual culture of the Napoleonic period and the evolution of historical reportage through print media.
