Antoni Tàpies, a Catalan artist, developed a distinct visual language that often incorporated everyday materials. In this work, he utilises a page from a newspaper as the primary surface. The newsprint, with its dense columns of text, provides a textured, ephemeral background that contrasts with the bold, gestural marks applied over it.

A large, dark cross dominates the composition. Tàpies frequently employed the cross as a symbol, referencing both personal identity and broader cultural or religious themes. The application of paint is raw and immediate, showing the physical movement of the artist's hand. To the right, a splash of red pigment disrupts the order of the printed text. This addition introduces a sense of urgency and material weight, typical of the artist's approach to the canvas or paper surface.

This piece reflects the aesthetic of the Informel movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and the tactile quality of materials over traditional representation.
