A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by William Faithorne the Elder, portraying the physician and author John Bulwer.
This engraving by William Faithorne the Elder depicts John Bulwer, a seventeenth-century physician and early investigator of communication methods for the deaf. Faithorne, a master of the burin, utilised precise cross-hatching and stippling techniques to render the textures of Bulwer's clothing and the subtle contours of his face. The portrait is contained within an oval frame, a common convention in seventeenth-century printmaking, which provides a sense of depth and focus on the subject. Below the portrait, a blank cartouche or drapery element is included, intended for the addition of biographical text or a coat of arms, which was standard practice for frontispieces of the era.
Bulwer is shown in a three-quarter view, his hand resting against his chest in a gesture that suggests both contemplation and the rhetorical traditions of the period. His expression is composed, reflecting the intellectual rigour associated with his medical and philosophical pursuits. The background is filled with fine, regular lines that create a subtle shadow, ensuring the figure remains the primary focus. Faithorne's ability to capture the likeness and character of his sitters through the medium of copperplate engraving made him one of the most sought-after printmakers in London during the mid-seventeenth century. This work exemplifies the technical discipline required for such detailed portraiture, where every line contributes to the overall modelling of form and light. The print remains a clear example of the portrait engraving style that defined the visual culture of the English Restoration period, balancing technical precision with a formal, dignified presentation of the subject.
