A sixteenth-century Flemish engraving depicting Saint John the Evangelist on the island of Patmos, complete with his traditional eagle attribute.
This print by the Flemish cartographer and engraver Gerard de Jode depicts Saint John the Evangelist during his exile on the island of Patmos. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a common format for devotional prints of the sixteenth century. John is shown seated at the base of a tree, his gaze directed upwards towards a vision of Christ, while he records his revelations in a book. Beside him, the eagle, his traditional attribute, stands with wings partially unfurled. The background features a modest coastal view, suggesting the remote nature of his surroundings.
The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail in the drapery of John's robes and the texture of the eagle's feathers. De Jode employs cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, providing a sense of volume to the figure and the surrounding terrain. The corners of the square frame are filled with decorative motifs, balancing the circular central image. Below the image, a Latin inscription provides a theological context for the scene, linking the act of writing to the divine inspiration received by the saint.
Gerard de Jode was active in Antwerp, a major centre for print production during the late sixteenth century. His work often involved collaboration with other artists and cartographers, and his output included both religious subjects and maps. This specific print reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, where figures were often rendered with a sense of classical proportion, yet placed within settings that allowed for narrative clarity. The print is an example of the small-scale devotional works that were widely circulated among collectors and the faithful during the Northern Renaissance. It demonstrates the technical proficiency of the Antwerp school in translating complex theological narratives into accessible visual forms through the medium of copperplate engraving.
