A six-panel folding screen by Kano Sanraku depicting the serene Jinshan Island and West Lake in traditional ink wash style.
This six-panel folding screen, attributed to Kano Sanraku, depicts the legendary Jinshan Island and the scenic West Lake. Sanraku, a prominent figure of the Kano school, demonstrates his mastery of ink wash techniques, known as suibokuga, within this composition. The work balances solid forms with expansive negative space, a hallmark of the period's aesthetic preferences.
The scene unfolds across the panels with a rhythmic progression of craggy rock formations, architectural structures, and calm waters. Sanraku employs varying ink densities to suggest atmospheric depth, with distant mountains fading into the golden-toned paper. The architecture, rendered with precise, controlled lines, provides a sense of human presence amidst the natural grandeur. Small boats navigate the water, adding a narrative element to the serene environment.
As a representative of the Kano school, the artist draws upon Chinese stylistic traditions while adapting them to the Japanese screen format. The composition is structured to guide the viewer's eye across the expanse, creating a sense of movement and continuity. The use of gold-tinted paper provides a warm, luminous background that contrasts with the monochrome ink, a common feature in high-status commissions of the Momoyama and early Edo periods. This piece reflects the technical rigour and stylistic refinement associated with Sanraku's career, particularly his ability to integrate large-scale architectural settings into natural environments. The screen functions as both a decorative object and a contemplative visual experience, inviting the viewer to engage with the details of the brushwork and the overall balance of the scene.
