A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Joseph Goupy, depicting the biblical scene of Jacob's Dream after a painting by Salvator Rosa.
This etching by Joseph Goupy depicts the biblical narrative of Jacob's Dream, a subject frequently explored by artists of the period. Goupy, a French-born artist who settled in London, was known for his skill in reproducing the works of earlier masters. This particular print is based on a painting by Salvator Rosa, as indicated by the inscription 'Salvator Rosa pinxit' in the lower left corner. The composition follows the dramatic conventions of the Baroque style, featuring a rugged, mountainous terrain that frames the central vision.
In the lower right, the figure of Jacob is shown in a state of repose, his form partially obscured by the rocky ground. Above him, a ladder ascends into the clouds, populated by several angels. The line work is precise and energetic, characteristic of eighteenth-century etching techniques. Goupy uses varied hatching to define the textures of the craggy cliffs, the gnarled trees, and the billowing clouds. The contrast between the dark, solid foreground and the lighter, ethereal sky creates a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective.
As a printmaker, Goupy played a role in the dissemination of European art to British collectors. The inscription at the base, 'Servatur Exemplar in Edibus Illustrissimi Principis Gulielmi Ducis Devoniae', notes that the original painting was held in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire. This detail provides insight into the provenance of the source material and the status of such prints as objects of connoisseurship during the Georgian era. The work remains a clear example of the technical proficiency required to translate the painterly qualities of a large-scale oil work into the monochromatic medium of an etching, maintaining the dramatic tension inherent in the original composition.
