A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Nicolaes Moeyaert depicting the biblical scene of Jacob burying idols beneath a terebinth tree.
This etching by Nicolaes Moeyaert depicts the biblical narrative from Genesis 35, where Jacob commands his household to discard their foreign idols before travelling to Bethel. The composition centres on a figure digging into the earth, surrounded by a group of observers in period-appropriate attire. Moeyaert, a significant figure in the Dutch Golden Age, often drew inspiration from the works of Adam Elsheimer, which is evident in the treatment of the figures and the atmospheric, ruinous background.
The scene is set against a backdrop of crumbling classical architecture, a common trope in seventeenth-century Dutch art to suggest antiquity and the passage of time. The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail in the textures of the stone, the foliage, and the clothing of the figures. The artist employs varied line weights to create depth, guiding the eye from the foreground activity towards the distant, ruined structures. The inclusion of a dog near the digger adds a touch of naturalism to the otherwise solemn, ritualistic event.
Moeyaert was known for his ability to integrate biblical subjects into settings that felt accessible to his contemporaries. His work often features a specific type of theatrical lighting and a focus on human gesture to convey the emotional weight of the narrative. This print serves as a fine example of the period's interest in moralising themes, presented through the lens of classical influence and technical precision. The Latin inscription at the bottom, 'Jacob sepiliuit idola supter Terebinthum gen 35', provides the specific scriptural reference for the viewer, ensuring the narrative remains clear despite the stylised, imaginative setting.
