Beschreibung
A portrait by André Derain from the early 1920s, featuring a woman in traditional dress rendered with a focus on classical form and balanced composition.
This portrait by André Derain captures a subject in traditional attire, reflecting the artist's shift away from the radical colour experiments of his early Fauvist period. Painted during the early 1920s, the work demonstrates a return to classical structure and a more restrained palette. Derain employs a deliberate, measured approach to form, focusing on the solidity of the figure against a simplified background.
The subject wears a white head covering and a blouse with lace detailing, rendered with visible, controlled brushwork. Her expression is calm, with a direct gaze that engages the viewer. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned centrally. Derain uses a warm, earthy tone for the background, which contrasts with the cooler whites and blues of the clothing. This choice of colour creates a sense of stability and weight, characteristic of his post-war output.
Derain was a central figure in the development of early 20th-century French art. After his involvement with Fauvism, he explored various stylistic directions, including a period influenced by the masters of the Renaissance and the 19th-century French tradition. This portrait belongs to that phase, where he sought to reconcile modern sensibilities with historical techniques. The paint application is less spontaneous than his earlier works, showing a focus on volume and the physical presence of the sitter. The result is a work that feels grounded and permanent, avoiding the fleeting effects often pursued by his contemporaries. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, allowing for a close examination of Derain's brushwork and his careful construction of the human form.

Artist Biography
Andre Derain
He was born in Chatou in 1880 and had originally studied to become an engineer. He met Matisse in 1898 while attending painting classes under Eugene Carriere. The Fauvist paintings are explosions of unnatural colour: trees in orange, water in violet, shadows in green. They were among the most radical works produced in Paris at the turn of the century.
By 1908, Derain was already breaking with the style. He turned to Cezanne, then passed through a Cubist phase, and by the 1920s had arrived at a fully Neoclassical manner. The wildest of the Fauves became one of the most conservative painters in France. The conservative turn brought financial success and mainstream praise. During the Second World War, the Nazis approved of his Neoclassical work. After the war, he was unjustly accused of collaboration. His reputation never fully recovered. He died in 1954.
