Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, frequently turned his attention to the industrial transformation of the Parisian suburbs at the turn of the twentieth century. This work depicts the excavation site at Issy-les-Moulineaux during the development of the Paris Métro. Unlike Seurat, who sought a scientific precision, Luce used Pointillism to capture the energy and dynamism of modern life, particularly the industrial world. His paintings demonstrate a fascination with light and colour and an interest in capturing the atmosphere of his subjects.
