Beschreibung
A 1954 abstract work by Morris Louis, featuring vertical bands of colour applied through his signature soak-stain technique.
Iris is a work by Morris Louis, an American painter associated with the Washington Color School. Created in 1954, this piece belongs to the period when Louis began experimenting with the soak-stain technique. He applied thinned Magna paint directly onto unprimed canvas, allowing the pigment to permeate the fibres rather than sitting on the surface. This method removes the physical presence of the artist's brushwork, creating a flat, unified image where colour and support become one.
The composition of Iris features vertical bands of colour that bleed into one another. The palette consists of muted earth tones, including soft ochres, deep greens, and subtle pinks. These hues appear to flow downwards, suggesting a sense of gravity and movement. By avoiding traditional forms or representational subjects, Louis focuses the viewer on the interaction of the pigments themselves. The unpainted areas of the canvas act as a frame, allowing the colour to breathe and expand within the space.
Louis was influenced by the work of Helen Frankenthaler, particularly her 1952 painting Mountains and Sea. After seeing her technique, he abandoned his earlier style to pursue the possibilities of fluid paint application. Iris demonstrates his interest in the optical effects of colour and the physical properties of the medium. The work lacks a central point of focus, encouraging the eye to move across the surface. This approach to painting shifted the focus away from gesture and towards the properties of colour and light. As a result, the work maintains a sense of openness and clarity, characteristic of his contributions to mid-century American abstraction.
