A 1970 screenprint by Patrick Heron, exploring the optical tension between bold, irregular shapes and a deep green field.
Patrick Heron was a central figure in the development of British abstract art during the mid-twentieth century. Associated with the St Ives School, his work often explores the interaction of colour and form on a flat plane. This screenprint, produced in 1970, demonstrates his characteristic approach to non-representational composition. The image relies on the spatial tension created between large, irregular shapes and the surrounding field of deep green.
Heron believed that colour possessed its own energy and spatial depth. By placing high-chroma shapes against a dark, recessive background, he forces the viewer to perceive the forms as shifting forward or receding into the surface. The scarlet and pink elements appear to float or vibrate against the green, a technique Heron refined throughout his career. His interest in the optical effects of colour was influenced by his observations of light in Cornwall, where he lived and worked for many years.
Unlike traditional painting, which often seeks to create an illusion of three-dimensional space, this work emphasises the physical reality of the paper and ink. The shapes are not symbols for objects, but are instead autonomous entities. The composition is balanced through the placement of these forms, which avoid a central focus, encouraging the eye to move across the entire surface. This print captures the essence of Heron's mature style, where the dialogue between hue and shape remains the primary subject. The clean edges and flat application of ink are typical of his screenprinting practice, allowing for a precise execution of his colour theories. By stripping away narrative or representational content, Heron invites a direct, sensory engagement with the work, focusing entirely on the relationship between the chosen pigments.
