A conceptual, pixelated representation of the Netherlands drawn on graph paper, exploring the intersection of cartography and geometric abstraction.
This work by Dutch artist and writer Reinjan Mulder presents a reductionist interpretation of the Netherlands. Executed on standard graph paper, the drawing strips away geographical detail in favour of a geometric, pixelated representation of the national territory. The coastline is defined by the rigid, stepped edges of the grid, while the interior is populated by a series of red squares. These markers suggest a systematic approach to mapping, perhaps referencing population density, administrative divisions, or urban centres, yet they remain detached from traditional cartographic accuracy.
The use of graph paper as a substrate is a deliberate choice, grounding the work in the language of technical drafting and mathematics. By imposing a grid upon the organic shape of the country, Mulder forces the viewer to consider the tension between natural borders and human-imposed systems of measurement. The blue shading along the perimeter serves to distinguish the landmass from the surrounding space, further emphasising the artificial nature of the boundary. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the white paper, the blue border, and the rhythmic placement of the red squares.
Reinjan Mulder, known for his work as a journalist and critic, often engages with themes of structure and observation.
