Beschreibung
A detailed botanical study of the Indian Almond tree by Victorian explorer and artist Marianne North.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented flora across the globe with scientific precision. This work depicts the Indian Almond, or Terminalia catappa, a tree native to tropical regions. North travelled extensively between 1871 and 1885, often painting specimens in their natural habitats rather than from dried herbarium samples. Her approach prioritised the accurate representation of the plant's structure, leaf morphology, and seasonal colour changes.
The composition places the viewer in close proximity to the foliage. The large, obovate leaves are rendered with a focus on their glossy texture and the transition from deep green to autumnal shades of yellow and orange. The pendulous spikes of small flowers are captured with careful attention to their delicate form. In the background, a more distant view of the tree provides context for its growth habit, showing the tiered, horizontal branching pattern characteristic of the species.
North's work is housed in the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. She designed the gallery herself to display her collection of over 800 paintings. Her output remains a valuable record of botanical diversity during the late nineteenth century. This print captures the specific observational quality of her oil paintings, where the clarity of the foreground subject contrasts with the softer, atmospheric treatment of the surrounding environment. The work reflects the Victorian interest in natural history and the documentation of colonial territories through a scientific lens.

Indian Almond (Terminalia catappa) - Marianne North
Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
