This woodblock print by Adachi Ginkō depicts the formal ceremony held on 11 February 1889, marking the promulgation of the Meiji Constitution. The scene captures the interior of the State Chamber within the newly constructed Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Emperor Meiji stands at the centre, presiding over the event, while officials and dignitaries gather in formal Western-style military and diplomatic attire. This shift in dress reflects the rapid modernisation and Westernisation policies adopted by Japan during the Meiji period.
