A detailed Meiji-era woodblock print depicting the foreign settlement in Yokohama, featuring Western-style architecture and a mix of traditional and modern dress.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige III captures the rapid modernisation of Japan during the early Meiji period. The scene depicts the foreign settlement in Yokohama, a port city that became the primary gateway for Western influence in the late nineteenth century. The composition features a central Catholic church, flanked by Western-style stone buildings with red shutters and tiled roofs. In the background, the silhouette of Mount Fuji provides a traditional Japanese anchor to the otherwise foreign architectural environment.
Figures in the foreground display a mix of cultural attire. Japanese men in traditional kimono walk alongside individuals dressed in Western military uniforms and Victorian-style dresses. A horse-drawn carriage and a cart laden with cargo further emphasise the influx of foreign technology and trade practices. The print belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of woodblock prints that documented the arrival of foreigners and the resulting changes in Japanese urban life. These works functioned as visual news reports for a public curious about the outside world.
Technically, the print utilises the standard ukiyo-e process, with distinct outlines and flat areas of colour. The sky features a characteristic bokashi, or colour gradation, transitioning from a deep blue at the top to a soft pink near the horizon. The architectural details, such as the stone masonry and the church steeple, reflect the artist's attempt to render unfamiliar Western structures through a traditional Japanese aesthetic lens. This print offers a specific historical record of the cultural exchange occurring in Yokohama during the 1870s, documenting the physical transformation of the city as it adapted to international commerce and diplomatic relations.
