This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts a large-scale military exercise, capturing the modernisation of the Japanese armed forces during the late Edo period. The composition is a triptych, a format frequently used by ukiyo-e artists to represent expansive scenes or complex narratives. Yoshitoshi organises the visual space into three distinct panels, showing cavalry units on the left, infantry formations in the centre, and artillery manoeuvres on the right.

The print documents the adoption of Western-style military uniforms, weaponry, and tactical formations. The soldiers wear dark tunics and kepi-style caps, reflecting the influence of European military models that were being integrated into Japan at the time. Yoshitoshi employs a clear, graphic style, using flat areas of colour and defined outlines to distinguish the various units across the green terrain. A large plume of smoke rises in the centre, providing a sense of scale and activity to the training exercise.
