A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki depicting a scene from a series on wedding proposals.
Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki was a prolific German printmaker and painter, widely recognised for his small-scale etchings that captured the social customs and daily life of the eighteenth century. This work, titled The Polish Slaves, forms part of a series illustrating various wedding proposals. It demonstrates the artist's characteristic precision and his ability to convey narrative through modest, controlled lines.
The composition features two central figures engaged in a quiet exchange, set against a backdrop of rural labour. Chodowiecki employs a delicate etching technique to define the textures of the clothing and the subtle atmospheric effects of the sky. The figures are rendered with a focus on costume and posture, reflecting the artist's interest in ethnographic detail and social observation. In the background, secondary figures continue their work, providing a sense of context to the primary interaction. The inclusion of the title in both German and French at the base of the print indicates the international circulation of Chodowiecki's work during his lifetime.
As a master of the miniature, Chodowiecki produced thousands of illustrations for books and almanacs. His work provides a window into the Enlightenment era, documenting the fashions, manners, and social hierarchies of the period with clarity. This print is a fine example of his technical skill, showing how he balanced narrative clarity with the limitations of the small-format etching plate. The work remains a valuable record of historical costume and social history, presented with the understated elegance typical of the artist's oeuvre.
