This work is a characteristic example of the graphic style developed by Ivan Bilibin for his series of Russian fairy tale illustrations. Created in 1906, the image depicts a scene from Alexander Pushkin's poem, The Tale of the Golden Cockerel. The composition features the wise man presenting the magical bird to King Dodon, set against a backdrop of a stylised Russian city with onion domes.
Bilibin employed a distinct technique that draws heavily from traditional Russian woodblock prints and icon painting. The image is defined by clear, black ink outlines that contain the flat, muted colour fields. This approach creates a graphic, two-dimensional quality that emphasises the decorative elements of the costumes and the architectural details of the balcony. The floor pattern, rendered in a stark black and white checkerboard, provides a geometric anchor for the figures, while the distant landscape remains secondary to the primary narrative interaction.
As a member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, Bilibin sought to revive interest in national artistic traditions. His work often incorporates motifs from folk embroidery and traditional textiles, which are visible here in the floral patterns adorning the King's robes. The artist's attention to historical costume and architectural form reflects his broader interest in ethnography and the preservation of pre-modern Russian aesthetics. This print captures the precise, disciplined line work that made Bilibin a central figure in early twentieth-century book illustration, offering a clear window into the intersection of literary narrative and graphic design.
