This woodblock print originates from the 'Eight Kinds of Painting Manuals', a collection produced during the Qing Dynasty. Cai Chonghuan, a skilled artisan of the period, contributed to the dissemination of classical Chinese aesthetics through these instructional volumes. The work combines the literary tradition of Tang Dynasty poetry with visual representations of flora, a practice common in the pedagogical texts of the time.
The image displays a double-page spread. On the right, vertical columns of Chinese calligraphy present a poem, likely by the Tang poet Wang Wei, given the reference to 'Zhuli Guan' (Bamboo Pavilion). The text is rendered in a clear, formal script, accompanied by traditional red seal impressions. On the left, a monochrome illustration depicts a flowering branch, possibly plum or cherry blossom, emerging from a rocky outcrop near a stream. The artist uses varied line weights to define the gnarled texture of the wood and the delicate structure of the blossoms.
