Beschreibung
A quiet, stylised view of the Ile de la Cité in Paris, painted by the French artist Henri Rousseau around 1900.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter who worked as a customs officer, produced this view of the Ile de la Cité in Paris around 1900. The work captures the Seine and the historic centre of the city with the distinct, simplified clarity that defines his approach to painting. Unlike his contemporaries who sought to capture fleeting light or atmospheric effects, Rousseau focused on precise, almost static forms.
The composition is structured around the horizontal lines of the riverbank and the bridge, which contrast with the verticality of the trees and the distant architecture. The foliage is rendered with a repetitive, rhythmic application of paint, creating a dense texture that frames the urban scene. The buildings in the background appear flattened, lacking traditional linear perspective, which contributes to the dreamlike quality often associated with his work.
Small, silhouetted figures walk along the quay, providing a sense of scale to the environment. The palette is dominated by muted greens, earthy browns, and a pale, cloud-filled sky. This work demonstrates his ability to transform a familiar Parisian location into a personal, stylised vision. Rousseau often painted from memory or postcards, allowing him to manipulate reality to suit his aesthetic preferences. His work remains distinct for its lack of academic training, which allowed him to develop a unique visual language that influenced later generations of modern artists. This print captures the quiet, observational nature of his urban studies, offering a glimpse into the artist's interpretation of his home city.

Ile de la Cité - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
