A detailed 1726 architectural etching by Pieter van der Aa, depicting the formal gardens and palace of the Villa d'Este in Tivoli.
This detailed architectural plan, titled Ichnographia Palatii Hortique Tiburtini, depicts the Villa d'Este in Tivoli. Produced by the Dutch publisher and cartographer Pieter van der Aa in 1726, the print offers a bird's-eye view of the estate's famous gardens and palace structure. The composition is organised with mathematical precision, reflecting the formal garden design principles of the period.
The print functions as both a technical document and a visual record of the site. It includes a numbered key, or 'explicatio', which identifies specific fountains, terraces, and garden features. The layout emphasises the symmetry and geometric order of the parterres, reflecting the Italian Renaissance style that influenced European garden design for centuries. The palace itself sits at the top of the composition, serving as the anchor for the cascading levels of the grounds below.
Van der Aa was known for his prolific output of maps, atlases, and topographical prints. His work often involved the compilation of existing plates from various sources, which he then published in large-scale collections. This particular etching demonstrates the clean, precise line work characteristic of 18th-century copperplate engraving. The use of hatching and cross-hatching provides depth to the architectural elements, while the clear labelling system allows the viewer to navigate the complex topography of the site. This print is a valuable example of how topographical information was disseminated to an educated public during the Enlightenment, providing a clear, structured understanding of one of Italy's most celebrated villas.
