A classic Japanese woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu featuring two kabuki actors in a winter scene, capturing the expressive gestures of traditional theatre.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicts the actors Ichikawa Norinosuke and Ichikawa Yonejuro in their respective roles as Morihachi and Yonehachi. Sadanobu, a prominent figure in the Osaka school of printmaking, specialised in yakusha-e, or actor prints, which captured the theatrical energy of the kabuki stage. Unlike the Edo school, which often favoured stylised, elongated figures, the Osaka artists frequently focused on the specific facial expressions and physical gestures of the performers.
The composition presents the two comedians in a rural setting, contrasting their dynamic, performative postures with a quiet, snowy backdrop. One actor is captured in a crouched position, interacting with a large bowl, while the other is mid-motion, holding wooden clappers. Their garments feature bold, geometric patterns that provide a visual counterpoint to the softer, muted tones of the winter landscape behind them. The use of line is precise, typical of the mid-nineteenth-century Osaka style, where the focus remained on the characterisation of the actors rather than atmospheric depth.
Sadanobu was known for his technical skill in woodblock carving and his ability to document the specific performances of his time. This work functions as a record of a particular theatrical moment, preserving the costumes, props, and physical comedy associated with these specific roles. The print reflects the cultural appetite for kabuki imagery, which allowed audiences to collect portraits of their favourite performers. The inclusion of cartouches containing the actors' names and roles confirms the print's purpose as a souvenir or promotional item for the theatre-going public of the period. The balanced arrangement of the figures against the open space of the background demonstrates the artist's command of the medium, ensuring the focus remains on the expressive nature of the two comedians.
