This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicts two prominent kabuki actors in their respective roles. The composition follows the yakusha-e tradition, which focuses on the portrayal of actors from the popular theatre of the Edo period. On the right, Ichikawa Ebizō V appears as the character Senso Dōjin. On the left, Jitsukawa Ensaburō is shown as the legendary hero Jiraiya.
Sadanobu, a significant figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking based in Osaka, captures the dramatic intensity of the stage. The actors are rendered with exaggerated facial expressions and bold, calligraphic lines that define their features and costumes. The use of colour is deliberate, with deep indigo backgrounds providing a contrast to the patterned garments and the pale skin tones of the figures.
