A seminal 1947 collage by Eduardo Paolozzi, widely considered one of the first works of the Pop Art movement.
Eduardo Paolozzi created this collage in 1947 while living in Paris. It is widely recognised as one of the earliest examples of Pop Art. The work consists of various found materials, including magazine clippings, advertisements, and pulp fiction covers. By assembling these disparate elements, Paolozzi examined the influence of American consumer culture on post-war Britain.
The composition features a central image of a pin-up girl taken from a magazine, positioned alongside a Coca-Cola advertisement and a military aircraft. The inclusion of the word 'POP!' in a speech bubble, originating from a pulp magazine cover, is often cited as the first time the term appeared in a fine art context. The collage aesthetic reflects the artist's interest in the mass-produced imagery that defined the mid-twentieth century. Paolozzi utilised these fragments to construct a commentary on the bombardment of visual information in modern life.
This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to recontextualise commercial ephemera. By stripping these items of their original purpose and placing them within a new frame, Paolozzi invited viewers to consider the nature of desire, consumption, and the construction of identity through media. The work remains a significant example of how artists began to incorporate the iconography of everyday life into their practice, moving away from traditional modes of representation. The physical texture of the original collage, with its layered paper and varied print qualities, is preserved in this high-quality fine art print, allowing for a close examination of the source materials used by the artist.
