A haunting lithograph by Symbolist artist Odilon Redon, featuring a mysterious, light-filled interior rendered in deep, velvety blacks.
This lithograph, titled 'Je vis une lueur large et pâle' (I Saw a Flash of Light, Large and Pale), is a plate from the 1896 portfolio 'La Tentation de Saint Antoine'. Odilon Redon, a central figure in the Symbolist movement, utilised the medium of lithography to explore the boundaries between reality and the subconscious. His mastery of the 'noirs'—the deep, velvety blacks achievable through lithographic crayon—is evident here, where shadow dominates the composition.
The image depicts a sparse, architectural interior. A staircase rises into the darkness on the right, while the left wall is illuminated by an ethereal, diffuse glow. This light source remains unseen, creating a sense of ambiguity and psychological tension. Redon avoids clear narrative markers, preferring to evoke a dreamlike state. The texture of the floorboards and the rough hatching on the walls demonstrate his technical precision, allowing the paper to retain its tactile quality beneath the dense layers of ink.
Redon often drew inspiration from literature, particularly the works of Gustave Flaubert. This print captures the quiet, unsettling atmosphere of a vision. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, Redon invites the viewer to project their own interpretations onto the scene. The work avoids the literal, instead prioritising the emotional resonance of the space. It is a characteristic example of his ability to transform mundane subjects into something strange and evocative through the manipulation of tone and contrast.
