This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai belongs to a series of large-format flower studies produced during the 1830s. The composition focuses on a cluster of white hydrangea blossoms, rendered with precise outlines and subtle colour gradients. A swallow is depicted in flight to the right, its form captured in a moment of motion. The background consists of a flat, yellow field, which provides a contrast to the cool tones of the flowers and the dark plumage of the bird.
Hokusai utilised the kacho-ga genre, or bird-and-flower painting, to explore natural forms through the technical constraints of the woodblock medium.
