A detailed historical drawing by Tethart Philip Christian Haag documenting the 1760 marriage ceremony of Charles Christian and Princess Carolina.
This detailed drawing by Tethart Philip Christian Haag captures the marriage ceremony of Charles Christian, Prince of Nassau-Weilburg, and Princess Carolina of Orange-Nassau, which took place in 1760. Haag, a German artist who spent much of his career in the Netherlands, was known for his precise documentation of court life and official events. The work provides a clear view of the interior of the Grote Kerk in The Hague, where the ceremony was held.
The composition is structured to emphasise the scale of the gathering. The artist uses a high vantage point to survey the congregation, which fills the nave of the church. In the foreground, a row of soldiers stands in uniform, their backs to the viewer, creating a sense of order and formality. The central figures of the bride and groom are positioned near the centre of the space, surrounded by members of the nobility and court officials. To the left, a large, ornate pulpit rises above the crowd, adding verticality to the scene.
Haag employs a delicate technique, using fine graphite lines to define the architectural features of the church and the individual figures. The application of watercolour is restrained, with soft, muted tones that allow the structural clarity of the drawing to remain the primary focus. The walls of the church are adorned with numerous heraldic shields and memorial plaques, reflecting the aristocratic context of the event. This piece functions as a visual record of an eighteenth-century dynastic union, documenting both the social hierarchy and the ceremonial traditions of the Dutch court. The work is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, where it serves as a primary source for the study of mid-eighteenth-century courtly life and interior architecture.
