This work by Soga Chokuan depicts a hunting hawk perched upon a wooden bar, a subject that held significant cultural weight during the Momoyama period in Japan. The artist, active in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, belonged to the Soga school, which was known for its distinct approach to ink wash painting. The composition focuses on the bird, rendered with precise brushwork that captures the texture of its feathers and the tension in its posture. The hawk is tethered to the perch, a detail that speaks to the practice of falconry, which was a pursuit associated with the samurai class and the military elite of the era.
The use of ink on paper allows for a range of tones, from the deep, saturated blacks of the hawk's wings to the lighter, more atmospheric washes that define the background.
