A page from Kuwagata Keisai's instructional manual, featuring simplified figure studies rendered in a minimalist, light-handed woodblock style.
Kuwagata Keisai, also known as Kitao Masayoshi, produced this instructional manual during the Edo period. The work, titled Jinbutsu ryakugashiki, demonstrates a method for rendering human figures through simplified, abbreviated forms. This approach reflects the artist's interest in distilling complex subjects into their essential visual components, a technique that gained popularity among amateur artists and students of the time.
The print features a series of vignettes arranged across the page. Each figure is constructed with minimal ink strokes, prioritising economy of line over anatomical precision. The artist employs a muted palette of soft blues, greens, and greys, applied with a light touch that allows the texture of the paper to remain visible. These figures occupy a neutral space, free from background detail, which directs the viewer's attention to the posture and gesture of each subject. From a person leaning against a large vessel to a figure mounted on an ox, the scenes capture everyday activities with a sense of humour and ease.
Keisai was a versatile artist who transitioned from the traditional Ukiyo-e style to a more individualistic mode of expression. His manuals were widely circulated, providing accessible guidance for those wishing to learn the art of drawing. The work is a clear example of the Japanese aesthetic of reduction, where the artist achieves a complete narrative or character study with only a few deliberate marks. The composition is balanced, with the figures distributed across the two-page spread in a manner that suggests a casual, sketchbook quality. This print offers a glimpse into the pedagogical practices of eighteenth-century Japan, where the mastery of form was achieved through the study of simplified, repeatable shapes.
