A sombre depiction of the aftermath of a cavalry engagement during the Spanish-American War, rendered in Remington's characteristic realist style.
Frederic Remington produced this work in 1898, capturing the grim reality of the Spanish-American War. The composition focuses on the aftermath of a skirmish near Santiago de Cuba, where the heavy toll on cavalry mounts is depicted with stark clarity. Remington, who worked as a war correspondent and illustrator, utilised his direct observations of the conflict to inform his artistic output. The scene is dominated by a palette of muted greys, browns, and blacks, which reinforces the sombre nature of the subject matter.
In the foreground, fallen horses and discarded equipment lie scattered across the dusty ground. A single soldier stands amidst the carnage, his posture suggesting a moment of reflection or exhaustion. In the background, other troops continue their advance, creating a contrast between the immediate loss of life and the ongoing military operation. Remington avoids romanticising the event, choosing instead to document the physical cost of the engagement. His brushwork is loose yet precise, capturing the tension and the chaotic atmosphere of the battlefield. The painting reflects the artist's ability to convey narrative through movement and posture, particularly in the way the animals are rendered in their final moments. This piece remains a notable example of his late-nineteenth-century work, documenting the transition of warfare at the turn of the century.
