An architectural study by Walter Gropius for the Dammerstock housing project, featuring detailed plans, elevations, and sections of a modernist residential block.
This architectural drawing documents the Dammerstock housing project in Karlsruhe, a significant example of modernist urban planning in Germany. Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus school, led the design team for this development, which aimed to provide efficient, hygienic, and affordable housing through industrialised construction methods. The sheet displays a combination of technical views: a long elevation of the block, a floor plan detailing the interior layout, and a cross-section showing the structural arrangement of the building.
The design reflects the rationalist principles of the period. The inclusion of an exterior corridor, or Laubengang, was a deliberate choice to maximise space and light within the individual units while maintaining a compact building footprint. The floor plans reveal a focus on functional zoning, with clear separation between living areas and service spaces. The lines are precise and utilitarian, characteristic of the drafting standards employed by the Bauhaus office to communicate complex structural information to builders and contractors.
Dammerstock remains a reference point for the study of the Neues Bauen movement. The project prioritised standardisation and the use of modern materials to address the housing shortages of the late 1920s. By presenting the elevation alongside the plan and section, Gropius provides a comprehensive view of the building's logic. The drawing serves as a record of the rigorous planning process that defined the era, where aesthetic concerns were secondary to the requirements of mass production and social utility. This print offers a clear view into the technical methodology of one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century, capturing the clarity and discipline inherent in his approach to residential design.
