A 1926 oil painting by Gustave Loiseau depicting a quiet street in Pontoise, characterised by his signature cross-hatched brushwork and muted, earthy palette.
Gustave Loiseau, a painter associated with the Post-Impressionist tradition, frequently returned to the town of Pontoise to capture its quiet streets and historic architecture. This work, dated 1926, displays his characteristic approach to the urban environment. The composition focuses on a stone wall that leads the eye toward the buildings and the distant church tower, creating a sense of depth through the use of receding planes.
Loiseau employed a technique often described as 'en treillis' (cross-hatching), where short, rhythmic brushstrokes build up the surface of the canvas. This method gives the stone walls and the bare branches of the trees a textured quality, suggesting the crisp atmosphere of a cool day. The palette is composed of muted earth tones, ochres, and greys, which reflect the weathered stone and the seasonal transition of the trees. Unlike the fleeting light effects favoured by earlier Impressionists, Loiseau sought to capture the structural permanence of the scene.
The painting avoids dramatic narrative, instead presenting a contemplative view of a provincial French town. The church tower in the background provides a vertical anchor to the composition, contrasting with the horizontal lines of the wall and the sloping street. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow across the masonry, Loiseau demonstrates his interest in the physical reality of the architecture. This print captures the tactile nature of the original oil painting, preserving the specific brushwork and the subtle colour relationships that define his later work. It is a study of light, form, and the quiet character of Pontoise, rendered with the precision and restraint that marked his career.
