A minimalist ink painting by the Zen monk Fūgai Ekun, depicting the figure of Hotei gesturing toward the moon.
This ink painting by the Zen monk Fūgai Ekun depicts Hotei, the legendary Chinese monk often associated with contentment and abundance. Fūgai Ekun, a figure known for his reclusive life and unconventional approach to art, utilised the Zenga style to communicate spiritual concepts through minimal visual information. The composition is sparse, focusing on the figure of Hotei as he gestures towards the moon, a common motif in Zen iconography representing the ultimate truth or enlightenment.
The brushwork is deliberate and economical. Fūgai Ekun employs sweeping, fluid lines to define the voluminous robes of the figure, contrasting with the lighter, more gestural ink washes that suggest form without relying on anatomical precision. The negative space surrounding the figure is as important as the ink itself, creating a sense of stillness and contemplation. The inclusion of calligraphy to the right of the figure provides a textual layer to the visual narrative, typical of the integration between poetry and painting found in Edo-period Zen art.
Fūgai Ekun spent much of his later life living in caves, a practice that informed the raw, unrefined quality of his work. His paintings avoid the polished aesthetics of professional schools of the time, favouring a directness that aligns with the Zen emphasis on immediate experience. This piece captures the essence of Hotei, not as a static icon, but as a dynamic participant in a moment of spiritual recognition. The muted palette of ink on aged paper reinforces the quiet, meditative quality of the subject matter, making it a representative example of the Zenga tradition.
